"The New South: Ted Turner" from American Dreams: Lost and Found by Studs Terkel

Ted Turner's family went from "rags to riches." His grandfather lost everything in the Depression, and his father worked hard to achieve his dream. Turner believes in setting your goals high, so that you will always have something to work toward.

  1. Use our Search Resources page to gather information on Ted Turner's life and achievements. Write a summary of several paragraphs in which you describe the results of your research.

  2. Brainstorm in groups to name people from history or popular culture who went from rags to riches. Describe the specific goals that motivated this person and explain what the person did to achieve each of these goals.

  4. Discuss the following in a well-organized essay:
    Do you believe that riches lead to happiness? Explain your answer by using examples from your research and your real-life experience.
